The world is facing the worst locust plague in 70 years.

Overseas News Agency AFP, India Today and other media reported on the 26th that swarms of desert locusts are destroying crops in western and central India, prompting India to step up to the country ’s worst locust plague in nearly three decades. Gujar, deputy director of the Indian Locust Early Warning Organization, told the media: "Some areas of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are active with eight to ten locust swarms, and each locust swarm has an area of  about one square kilometer." It is the first time that such a large locust swarm has appeared in India since 1993.

China News Service reported on May 22 that the Governor of Pakistan ’s Punjab Province, Chowdhury Muhammad-Savar, said that Pakistan had suffered the worst locust plague in the past 30 years and that since June last year, Pakistan ’s eastern region has continued to suffer. The locust plague has affected wheat, corn, cotton and other crops. To this end, China has donated pesticides, insecticides and sprayers to help Pakistan cope with the locust disaster.

At the same time, recently, locust swarms began to appear in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE. This is the first large-scale occurrence of locusts in this area on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula.

According to CCTV News on the 28th, since last winter, locust swarms have spread in East Africa, North Africa, Iran, and Pakistan. Recently, locust swarms have moved south into India. Previously, because of the desert barrier in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula, the locust swarm did not enter the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Recently, researchers have discovered a large number of locusts in Ain, neighboring Oman, southwest of the UAE. With the recent strong winds, the locust swarm began to move to the UAE .

According to a survey by the World Food and Agriculture Organization, locust swarms have hit 23 countries in East Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. This is the largest locust plague in 70 years .

According to FAO, the desert locust is the most destructive migratory pest in the world. The one-square-kilometer locust group contains about 80 million adult locusts. The total amount of food consumed in one day can feed 35,000 people.

Huachuang Securities pointed out that affected by the coronavirus epidemic, many countries in East Africa even had difficulty importing pesticides this time, and the local people were unable to repel insects because of the "home order", which further aggravated the risk of food supply in Africa. Some analysts said that the locust plague was more devastating than the coronavirus.
